YouTube has unveiled a series of updates based on user feedback, featuring a variety of smaller tweaks and refinements aimed at enhancing the user experience.
To simplify, here’s a concise overview of what’s coming to your YouTube app and YouTube TV in the near future:
- Incremental Playback Speed: In response to user requests, YouTube is introducing more precise playback speed controls, allowing users to adjust the speed in 0.5-second increments. This caters to those who enjoy listening to podcasts at double speed and offers more specific controls for analyzing particular elements of videos in detail.
- Improved Browsing in Landscape Mode: YouTube is enhancing the browsing experience in widescreen mode by improving responsiveness, increasing thumbnail sizes, and enlarging text displays. This is especially beneficial for gaming streamers, as it enhances the overall viewing experience.
- Updated Miniplayer: The miniplayer is getting an upgrade, making it easier to browse other videos while watching content. Users will also have the ability to resize and reposition the miniplayer to suit their preferences.
- Collaborative Playlists: YouTube is introducing the ability for users to create collaborative playlists with friends and family. Users can invite others to contribute by sharing a special link, or soon, they can use a QR code on TV for easy playlist additions.
- Custom Thumbnails for Playlists: YouTube is enhancing playlists by allowing users to add custom thumbnails, along with the ability to vote on videos within playlists. This feature enables you and your friends to curate the perfect playlist together.
- Sleep Timer: YouTube is introducing a new Sleep Timer feature that lets you automatically pause videos after a designated duration. This is perfect for those who like to fall asleep while watching videos, allowing the app to turn off instead of leaving you to wake up to a stream of unrelated content playing all night.
- Achievement Badges in YouTube and YouTube Music: YouTube will also be rolling out new achievement badges to celebrate unique milestones, such as being among the first paid members of a creator’s channel or successfully completing quizzes.
Besides these changes, the YouTube company is rolling out a range of new visual improvements across the YouTube app and has further improved the experience of YouTube TV, including an updated Shorts UI that should make it easier to interact with Shorts and engage with the comments.
Changes are part of YouTube's annual refresh-it implements a range of tweaks and tests that it's been working on, usually for several months. You might have already seen some of these elements in testing, especially if you're a Premium subscriber, but now, YouTube is taking these particular elements to the next stage.
Will that make a huge difference to your experience of YouTube? I wouldn't say so, as none of these are major changes. But they're all helpful and will be really welcome to particular users in certain contexts.
These updates, YouTube says, will be rolled over the next few months.
