YouTube has reinstated Donald Trump's account.

YouTube said today that Donald Trump's YouTube channel, suspended in the week following the January 2021 riot on the U.S. Capitol building, will be unsuspended. At the time, YouTube said, echoing its sister platforms Twitter and Facebook, that Trump's social media accounts may be used to incite further violence.

As former president moves to launch 2024 presidential run, YouTube reverses course on account.

"Starting today, the Donald J. Trump channel is no longer suspended and can upload new content," YouTube said in a tweet. "We relied on experts' judgment of the ongoing real-world risk of serious violence, balancing the same with the chance for voters to hear equally from major national candidates in the run-up to an election.".

1/ The Donald J. Trump channel is no longer limited and may resume posting new content as of today. We balanced the continued real-world risk against the opportunity to hear equally from major national candidates in the run-up to an election:.

The revived channel, which has 2.64 million subscribers and over four thousand videos, might pose additional consequences if Trump's campaign is able to advertise on the service-according to an Ad Age tally, his campaign spent more than $10 million in digital ads in key states during 2020.

In November, the owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, voted on his platform using a day-long poll to see whether or not to reinstate Trump's account. He voted to replatform the former president, who hasn't yet used his reinstated account. Facebook reversed Trump's ban as well - he hasn't posted there either. He is keeping his word.

Since the former president lost his reelection campaign in 2020, he founded the Trump Media & Technology Group, or TMTG. The new media company describes itself as "canceling cancel culture" and "standing up to big tech." The company's social media app, Truth Social, launched 13 months ago.

Perhaps the reason Trump has been strangely silent on mainstream social media is his relationships with his own technology company. A filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission last year regarding TMTG's intention to go public via SPAC revealed that Trump has contractual obligations to Truth Social about his posts. When Trump posts a "truth" on Truth Social, he cannot repost it to any other social network for six hours.
