As X seeks to lean more into video content, as a means to drive more engagement, it also needs to improve video discovery. Live broadcasts prove particularly true, as even though followers should presumably see a tweet (excuse me, post) letting them know that the user they are following is streaming, they're out of luck otherwise if that notification passes them by, and currently, there is no alert or indicator to keep them updated on in-progress streams.
Now X is exploring how to fix this, by possibly including Spaces as live video streams alerts as well.
live video broadcasts may soon be placed at the top of user timelines, like Spaces, to help highlight in-progress broadcasts to more users.
It's not a huge technical change, and may need some explanation (most users will assume that these are just audio broadcasts). But it would at least be one way to better show live video content, and with X also looking to place more emphasis on live-streams, that could be an important, and valuable addition.
But it feels like a half measure, just a small step in the way of enhancing video experience, as opposed to, for instance, adding a full-screen video feed into a swipeable tab or even opening to a video feed, with users then flipping over across to their regular post feed.
That would be a pretty radical change, but if X actually wants to make video work, it definitely needs to push more users towards its video content. And I'm not sure that this update, if it's rolled out, is going to do that.
But I do think that this could also be a question of capacity, and what X is really able to do with far fewer staff.
Now, the X team has repeatedly been boasting about its huge list of innovation and increased update velocity since Elon Musk took the helm at the app, but virtually all of those had actually been in development for months, and even years, before Musk wandered into the building carrying a sink.
Because of this, although X has rolled out loads of stuff, it hasn't really built many new elements from scratch, and it'll be interesting to now, with all of its old, shelved projects launched, see what the X team can do with a much smaller team.
You would think that most of the remaining employees were just trying to keep everything afloat, which could make actual, large-scale development hard enough, and with that, maybe repurposing other things is the best that X can currently do in order to stimulate discovery.
This is also, therefore, a not exactly the best time to be trying to get people to pay $8 per month to use the app, as it's not improving as a service. But on the other hand, the potential opportunity to monetise your posts will be an incentive in this regard and many of the existing X Premium subscribers are fans of Elon Musk, and his continuing quest to achieve free speech in the app. Which, from Musk's perspective at least, appears to be the right to insult people and/or make whatever untrue claims you like, without penalty.
The point is, this is not a huge shift, and it is unlikely to be the real driver of increased video consumption in the app, which is seemingly what X is trying for with its new push. A bigger update might be needed to really alter user behavior in this sense, but perhaps, X is not presently able to install a more significant process.
