X has tackled one of the main headaches with its creator ad revenue share program, introducing new and more granular listings of payments periods and how exactly, when, each creator has been paid.
X is now looking for more transparency in its listing of payment info with specific date ranges for ad share payouts.
In relation to its first payments, X has revealed very little information about how those payment figures have been estimated, with no impression or reach statistics, no reporting periods, etc. X is still a long way from full disclosure on this, but at the very least, this format lends some clarity to just how each user is paid, which may also, in theory, allow them to better plan for future payments.
Which has been the point of contention with other creator revenue share programs, in the sense that creators quickly rely on that extra cash, which makes any instability more difficult to manage. Snap, for instance, faced a lot of backlash in its Spotlight funding program because users pointed out the payments declined very quickly and varied too much, leaving them unsure what they would be earning month to month.
X will probably face the same, which is why more reporting will bring clarity to at least a few issues, and hopefully reduce creator anxiety over variable payout amounts.
And given the significant variances in reporting periods, that's especially important at this point in the initiative.
As you can see above, the first payout period covers six months, then switches to a monthly payment, then two weeks. As X works out its payment cadence, there's no doubt going to be plenty of questions from creators as to why amounts are changing so much, and with this additional detail, it will now be better clarified.
Although even with complete transparency, it's still going to be tough to fully calculate X's payouts. That's because X is only paying creators for ads shown to X Premium subscribers - that means total reach and impression data are largely irrelevant, as all of that depends on who exactly sees each post.
You would assume that with more reach comes bigger payments, but maybe, if your post doesn’t resonate with X Premium users, that won’t be the case, which will complicate the math with essentially unknown (outside of the company) variables.
But even so, more insight is better, and it’s good to see X adding more detail to help clarify its payment process, and help creators better understand such.
X Premium subscribers can obtain their own payment information through Settings > Monetization > Ads Revenue Sharing.
