X is looking to further integrate its new "Grok" chatbot tool, adding new Grok-generated descriptions of trending topics to the Explore page in the app.
the new format for Explore, which is still in testing, and may not ever make it to live production, would showcase Grok-generated summaries of all the key issues of the day, ideally providing more insight into why a certain topic is trending.
That might make for more users interested and engaged, but could at the same time very well do the opposite to that, giving users just a rundown of the core of each trend without needing them to tap through to discover more.
Then the trade-off would be more dedicated engagement around each topic, from more nuanced understanding, versus a more clickbait style, where you lure users in with a single term or name to find out more.
Hard to know which would be better for activity numbers in the app.
Grok, X's dedicated chatbot trained specifically on X data, is aiming to help X owner Elon Musk get into the race, answering the generative AI trend currently in the spotlight. It is available for X Premium+ subscribers.
This follows after a move by Musk to withhold access to X's users' data and content for large language model training, which occurred in direct response to how OpenAI used X's data to develop GPT; the LLM that feeds ChatGPT, Dall-E, and even more.
Musk has personal connections to this end, as he was an early investor in OpenAI when the project was pitched initially as a non-profit aimed at exploring the potential of AI for varying purposes. Musk donated $10 million to the initiative, then tried to take it over as CEO, an overture which was rebuffed by OpenAI leadership.
As a result, Musk stopped all further donations and withdrew from the project. Now, after several years, he is irked that OpenAI has become a for-profit enterprise, making money off of his large donation.
And that anger is justified, too. In a sense if I invested $10m in a project not to get the money back one day but now has earned billions only then would it be justified that I have every right to my anger for having been wronged or cheated too but at the same time trying simultaneously to sue them not to have access in the end to X postings then by developing your bot will leave me with having all expensive anger against something done to offend a part of me alone.
That would be reportedly what Musk pushes for-as he is soon to buy even more chips and plans to invest more than 1 billion in AI research through 2024. Conceivably, apparently, that will come paired with Tesla AI development itself while much of this will actually go towards optimizing Grok and turning valuable insights earned from X posts into a somewhat more real-time, more conversational, more chatting experience.
Though again, it will be a hard road. For perspective, Meta is reportedly investing around $10 billion per year in AI development, whereas Open AI CEO Sam Altman recently asked for "trillions" for his company's next-level initiatives.
So, by comparison, X's spending in this area is relatively low, making it tough for Grok to be a competitive offering. But Musk is counting on the value of X data, as well as his own nous for tech development, to drive the project forward, which will probably, eventually see him look for new capital for his xAI projects.
At the same time, you can expect to see X looking to bring Grok more upfront as it works to both lure more paying users and generate more interest in the project.
Which is what this new display is designed for, and maybe, by showcasing more Grok trend summaries, that will work to maximize interest, and get more people signing up.
I have seen very little appetite for the product, along with X Premium subs that weren't doing any type of lift for a little while. If, though X had something that put it some kind of niche category with this bot alone maybe might serve as a wide pitch to the product itself.
