The Facebook-owned messaging service is rolling out 3D avatars for its users around the world that can be used as profile photos or custom stickers — months after their debut on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger.
The CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, posted on Facebook Wednesday: "Avatars are coming to WhatsApp". The news follows a months-long beta test — first reported by WhatsApp beta tracker WABetaInfo in June.
For instance, WhatsApp explained in a post in a blog, that its users can have their personalized avatars as the profile photo, or choose one of 36 different custom stickers that differentiate various emotions and actions. On WhatsApp, Avatar stickers are sort of like Snap's Bitmoji or Apple's Memoji stickers.
"Your avatar is a digital version of you that can be created from billions of combinations of diverse hair styles, facial features, and outfits," said the company behind the popular instant messaging app.
WhatsApp said over time, users would get style enhancements to include lighting, shading, and hair style textures.
Users will be able to create their avatars on WhatsApp — once rolled out — by visiting the Settings menu. WhatsApp will also receive a "Use Avatar" option in profile photo settings, to let users make their virtual doppelganger as a profile photo, per the details on an FAQ page.
Meta said in 2019 it would add Bitmoji-like 3D avatars to Facebook and Messenger. They made the feature's first roll out available only in markets including Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Canada-but pushed deeper into the U.S. in 2020, expanding its availability. Avatars have also been rolled out to Instagram at the end of January.
WhatsApp confirmed to TechCrunch at this point, you can neither use your WhatsApp's avatar on Instagram or Facebook, nor be able to use your Meta avatar on WhatsApp from Instagram or Facebook. This means you have to create a new avatar within WhatsApp only in order to use an avatar on the app.
