Uber is pushing more electric vehicles onto its ride-hail and delivery platform and believes answering all of its drivers' EV-related questions with a chatbot will help. Starting early 2025, Uber launches an AI assistant for U.S. drivers powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o.
At launch, the assistant will only answer questions about electric vehicles, like where to charge them or which one to buy, but the integration will potentially span into other use cases down the road, an Uber spokesperson said.
Uber announced integration of its service with OpenAI's new flagship model -- which, as of this writing, is capable of having human-like conversations and reasoning in text, audio, and vision -- during the Go-Get event in London on Tuesday.
Upon launching the Uber driver app, of course, from the home screen, the AI assistant will be available to the drivers, and new information will be consistently updated throughout the chatbot. The company stated that based on need, location, and location of where there are government incentives available, it said it'll be able to respond accordingly.
Drivers will be able to ask the chatbot questions directly, aside from sending text-based queries, as well, and the chatbot will reply audibly to driver questions, according to an Uber spokesperson at TechCrunch.
The AI assistant does not specify which languages it will support; Uber is going to share more about supported languages closer to launch. According to OpenAI, GPT-4o can support more than 50 languages.
Uber is also launching an "EV mentorship program," where high-rated drivers who have experience in driving an EV will earn cash rewards and other incentives if they become mentors for drivers wanting to learn more about the experience of owning an EV.
Probably the company that shocked most is Uber. That is because Uber had announced a collaboration with OpenAI and suggested that is going to be playing a significant role in Uber's future. Since Go-Get is always a pretty climactic event surrounding with other issues about EV, Uber did not do much to pull the attention away from the line of news about climate, climate, and climate. Uber has focused on some new features and updates making it easier for riders and drivers to pick EVs.
For example, Uber Green of the ride-hail and delivery giant-where riders can choose to ride in a hybrid, or an EV in over 180 markets-will now feature an EV-only option in 40 cities, with more to follow. The first cities include New York City, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Paris, Auckland, and many others. In addition to that, riders can also set their preference in the Uber application so as to get matched with EV when one is nearby.
