Tips," the opt-in feature in which creators could receive one-time payments from their followers, will shut down on Tumblr today.

The tipping icon will automatically disappear starting today from all posts and blogs that enabled the feature. Creators who use the feature should note that money they received from tipping will be withdrawn through June 15.

And apparently, the reason to kill the feature is relatively simple: it hasn't caught on. After all, in a post last month from the company, "Tipping hasn't seen the usage we'd hoped for." And, it's been part of Tumblr's plan since last year's reorg to cut things that weren't doing well.

But while this will affect an extremely small number of you, we know that those of you who do tip do so with huge respect for your fellow Tumblr users, and we are sorry to have to take this away from you," the company added.

More recently, in 2022, the company released Tips, its second add-on, this time to its Post+ subscription service, which allowed creators to monetize their content by charging a fee to view it. Post+ was a hot mess that was discontinued last year after users universally booed it. So, what's surprising is that the final nail in the coffin was the platform's failed attempt at using Tips to make a buck off its users.

Other features of monetization include the Supporter badge, which is still active with a likely feature to add it on their blog. This badge will cost one $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year. The website of the company relates that "the supporter badge will get shinier and shinier over time as you continue to support Tumblr".

Tumblr is taking its tip jar feature to another level of enabling blog-level tipping.
