The social media firm, owned by Donald Trump's media company, has announced plans to launch a live streaming platform for TV. According to a press release, it will focus on "news networks" and "religious channels," among other content "cancelled, at risk of cancellation, or [is being] suppressed on other platforms and services." Service will be accompanied by "family-friendly" films and documentaries.
This will happen in three phases. First, the firm will introduce the CDN for streaming Truth Social on the Truth Social application on Android, iOS, and on the web. Next, Truth Social should deploy its over-the-top ("OTT") streaming applications for mobile, tablets, and other handheld devices. Finally, it shall go ahead to develop a streaming application for the television.
According to the Trump Media & Technology Group, TMTG, it has tested the streaming service on both its web and iOS platforms for the past six months and has "finished the research and development phase".
We are excited to be a part of the next giant leap in this next massive phase of Truth Social," said TMTG CEO Devin Nunes in the press statement. "Our streaming content is dedicated to acting as a permanent home for quality news and entertainment that face discrimination by other channels and content delivery services.
The move comes as Elon Musk's X has been trying to turn the social media website into a free-speech "video-first" platform. The social network currently features an original show hosted by former congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard and another by former Fox Sports host Jim Rome. Last month, Musk canceled a talk show deal with former CNN anchor Don Lemon after the multibillionaire was interviewed for the first episode of the show.
Truth Social launched publicly last month after the merger between TMTG and Digital World Acquisition, a SPAC, was approved. Its shares dropped this week after the company disclosed that it plans to sell more shares to boost the cash balance. This company is valued at billions but TMTG cannot seem to make a profit. According to reports, it had a net loss of about $49 million in 2023 while the revenue was less than $4 million.
According to Appfigures, quoted by TechCrunch, the Truth Social app has been downloaded nearly seven million times on the iOS App Store and Google Play combined.
