In conjunction with that, Truecaller launched a web version of its eponymous caller ID application, bringing in to the desktop a series of features, that include SMS and chat mirroring, call notifications, and number search functionality. Truecaller for Web will be made available first to Android users worldwide, though it plans to add support for iOS going forward, the company said.
Now, all Android users of Truecaller worldwide can connect their devices to a web client via any PC or Mac using a QR code. Truecaller currently limits active web sessions to just one and automatically logs out a user after 30 days of inactivity. It is also allowing users to unlink a browser manually from the settings. This is akin to linking the web version of a messenger service like WhatsApp or Telegram.
Truecaller, which has nearly 259 million users in its biggest market in India, is pretty late in offering the SMS and chat-mirroring feature. Notably, Microsoft provides SMS mirroring for both Android and iPhone users on Windows through its Phone Link functionality. This could prove to provide its users a bit of convenience in quickly responding to a text or accessing one-time passwords (OTPs) for login.
Truecaller already offered its users the option to search for a phone number on its website. However, there were some rate limitations involved. Now, it said that users will be able to look up their numbers without any such limitations on the web client. The web client also offers real-time caller ID notifications while a user is receiving a call.
The company claimed that its 80 million people receive SMS pop-up summary notifications every day. This means that these users haven't denied Truecaller permission to read SMS. However, it's not clear if these people are using Truecaller as their primary SMS client.
The company has been continuously churning out its more AI-powered features in recent months. Last month, the company rolled out a "Max" feature update for Android, where users can block all calls from unapproved contacts or spam detected by AI. It also brought call recording and AI-powered transcription features to India months after it launched the feature in the U.S last year.
After the company reported lower revenues for the quarter, in October 2023, its stock plunged by 32%. It, however, came out of the lows, so the stock that had touched its all-time low of SEK24.47 ($2.32) is now trading around SEK31.68 ($3) at the time of writing.
Truecaller informed that it started globally rolling out the feature, rather than just the Indian market, post the story publication. The story has been reflected to bring this update.
