TikTok announced a slate of activations to celebrate Latin Heritage Month, including a new creator showcase, in-app hub, support initiatives for creators, music highlights, and many more. According to TikTok:
We celebrate the powerhouses of creativity, resilience, and cultured places by the Latin community, where everyone gets to celebrate their heritage while contributing to global trends on TikTok. We're always inspired by our Visionary #CasaTikTok community, and we are honored to serve as a space where diverse voices come together to represent and celebrate Latin culture.
For its part, TikTok has unveiled its inaugural Latin Heritage Month Visionary Voices list, which highlights a lineup of Latin creators in various categories.
The users will have the opportunity to see the talents on a new #CasaTikTok page in the app of TikTok, under Latin-owned businesses, musicians, and more.
Also, TikTok is reaching out to other Latin creators to apply for its #CasaTikTok creator community program, which provides them with fuller access to educational resources, events and webinars, all aimed at helping creators improve content on the platform.
However, TikTok also wants to let the Latin musicians take control of the floor within the app:
"Our celebration of #CasaTikTok will also feature #MusicaLatina and #MusicaMexicana music playlists on our sounds page, guest curated by Visionary Voices honoree @rauwalejandro and @manuelturizoz."
TikTok will also drop Latin-owned businesses you can shop from in the app through live streams and the TikTok Shop, all while running an IRL #ShopLatinOwned Creator Mixer that will bring different Latin-owned brands together for a special live event.
TikTok is keen to highlight the contributions of different communities within the app but also the role the platform plays in amplifying these creators and thereby adding value to minority groups. And the app has arguably provided opportunities to many more communities, but seemingly hasn't been factored into the U.S. Government's assessment of the app's potential security risks.
Which, of course, it shouldn't, but events like this do underline the role that TikTok can and does play in facilitating expanded access and reach, especially for certain creators and niches.
