The company announced today that it is expanding its science-based STEM feed inside the app. This will see the TikTok app expand its slate of educational content, with special attention being paid to younger users.
TikTok launched its STEM feed originally in the U.S. last March, but it is bringing it to European audiences now.
"We want to empower young learners and students who may not have had equal access to quality education due to geographical or financial reasons," the company said.
"Starting today in the UK and Ireland, and over the coming weeks to Europe, users can tap on the STEM feed, alongside For You feed, to unlock a whole world of knowledge from respected experts in their fields. Feed content will be in English with auto-translate subtitles that two independent organizations will fact-check.".
These are Common Sense Networks and Poynter Institute, who'll offer more coverage to track the accuracy and worth of content shared with the STEM feed.
TikTok is partnering with a host of science creators that will help populate the new stream, including physicist @particleclara, who works on The Large Hadron Collider at CERN and @NewScientist magazine that gives insights into the latest scientific discoveries.
The company said new STEM feed will turn on by default for users under 18, as part of a push to help educate younger audiences, while older users will be able to opt in to get more scientific content in-app.
And thus far, TikTok says it has proven successful with younger users.
"Since its release in the United States, one-third of teenagers have gone to the STEM feed each week."
This is a great move, and that's why TikTok aims to increase that impact within other regions as well.
It's a very good move because it will help widen not only knowledge but also critical thinking within those audiences of the application.
