TikTok is expanding its 'Series' pay-subscription option, enabling creators to paywall certain content, giving more creators a chance to make money in the app.
Series will be available for eligible creators to share collections of content behind a paywall, allowing creators to include up to 80 videos in each Series set (each up to 20 minutes long) meaning it effectively enables long-form content subscriptions within the app.
Creators can charge between $1 and $190 for their Series subscriptions.
Initially, Series was only available to select creators. These days, TikTok set more defined boundaries on who can enroll. All creators over the age of 18 who have at least 10,000 followers can enable the program, pending regional availability.

From June 6, 2023, series creators, who are at least 18 years old and living in one of the selected countries, have an account age of at least 30 days with minimum 10K followers, have posted more than three public videos in the last 30 days, and also have at least 1K authentic video views in the last 30 days, will be eligible to join Series. Creators with less than 10K followers but who meet all the above qualifications, can apply using the link to premium content they have sold before on other platforms via the Creator Center in the TikTok app.
TikTok is still working to establish effective monetization models for its best stars, which it needs to do to keep them posting to its app. YouTube and IG provide better monetization opportunity, and though TikTok is the platform of the moment, the problem there is that if TikTok can't find ways to keep its top creators happy, they'll eventually drift off to other platforms instead, taking those huge audiences with them.
Some ways it seems like the big platforms should be looking to lock up their top creators with exclusive content deals, but simultaneously providing creators with greater freedom to monetize in different formats, expand their earnings and audience, and fuel each app's content streams.
Maybe, though, exclusive deals would be a little too limiting, and in any case, each app has to compete on the merits of its own monetization offering, which could well lead to better, more lucrative income streams for stars.
Either way, right now, every app is trying to sweeten its respective monetization model and TikTok still has some way to go in setting up better revenue share options to keep top creators happy.
Series could be a big step here, in that it could enable creators to share (and re-share) long-form content in the app. That would give creators more ways to maximize audience reach and more options for monetizing their content.
It's another element in TikTok's approach, which should help to improve its appeal for creators.
