Threads, Instagram's Twitter-like app, is now rolling out the ability for users to save a draft and take photos within the app. Those features were announced today by head of Instagram Adam Mosseri, who said they're designed to "make it easier to share your ideas on the fly." The official rollout comes just a few weeks after the app began testing the features with a small number of users. At the time, Mosseri described them as two of the platform's "most requested" features.
New features make Threads more like a rival to X -- an app that has had drafts and camera shortcuts forever -- but as of now, Threads only lets you save one draft at a time; X lets you save multiple. Users of Threads can now begin writing out a post they might want to share later on and then swipe down to save it as a draft.
You can also take photos within the app by clicking on the camera icon in the composer. If you want to take a photo and share it immediately, you are given an option to do that; otherwise, you are permitted to retake the photo taken. This saves time so that people don't go back to use their own device camera and then from there upload a photo attachment to the post.
The camera shortcut rolled out as app researcher Nima Owji indicated X was looking to take after its Threads app and carry forward the carousel format where multiple images are displayed across each other. Currently, on X, images show in a grid format which, in the future might go.
Threads has slowly been adding many new features since its launch in July 2023 to catch up with X. The social media app has just recently introduced a bookmarking feature, trending topics, and the ability to cross-post from Facebook to Threads.
