A fresh method for discovering topical conversations within the app?
Threads is working on a Communities feature named 'Loops.'

It would seem that Threads is trying to make good use of that stream of data, a new feature called "Loops" could help users discover even more relevant discussions in the app by making topic-based communities come out into the open.
And for once, a pretty good name. Like a loop in a Thread, distinguished from the principal thread. Good, I like it. But does it stick? Entirely another story.

As you see in the above screenshot, shared by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, users of Threads will apparently soon be able to add their individual Threads into a Loop, that feeds it into that topical community. It's not clear if that Thread will also be shared on the main timeline, but users appear to be able to join these Loops and get more-relevant updates fed into your Threads feed.

That is to say, basically an extension of X's Communities, ensuring that users can join various topic groups and have those very topics highlighted within the application.

Communities always feels a bit of an oddball for Twitter/X when it comes to public-facing networks, but apparently, Community usage is rising, as more people seek to curb certain engagements and keep certain discussions separate.

That aligns with the greater shift toward private messaging over public posting, and perhaps that's the same impetus Threads is using here.

According to recent updates added to the back-end code of the Threads application (spotted by Chris Messina), the looped communities will have a range of functional options, such as an ability to join, leave, include user-specific detail, and so forth. But Instagram has also informed TechCrunch that this is nowhere near live testing as yet.

Still, when it's ready, it might be a nice way to filter your Threads interactions, to find further, relevant discussions in the app. Users have been less likely to take on hashtags, since that's become largely an outdated notion, as algorithms would try now to be able to detect your interests and present you more of what you like, anyway.

Perhaps Loops will bridge this tight spot between the algorithmic matching and personal preference so that one will easily engage in a rather wide variety of relevant discussions that may occur in the app.
