This is interesting.
Instagram is currently working on a new update for Threads that will present still image posts shared from Instagram in a dedicated format within Threads. Instead of appearing as a link with a small thumbnail that redirects users back to Instagram, these posts will be displayed more prominently in the Threads interface.
Shared by app researcher Radu Oncescu, the new process will display single image and carousel posts from Instagram as full-size images in Threads updates, with the creators’ Instagram handle overlaid on the image. Tapping on a picture will redirect users to the original post on Instagram.
This same format is also being tested for Reels clips, providing a more integrated and visually appealing way to share Instagram content in its sister app.
This feature could be an effective way to enhance both your Threads and Instagram presence by resharing updates to Threads, thereby reducing content creation time while still maintaining an attractive profile display.
However, it’s not yet available to all users. I was unable to replicate this in my own posting experiments, but it appears to be rolling out to users soon.
We’ve reached out to the Threads team for more information on the potential rollout of the new Instagram link presentation format.
