As from yesterday, Instagram is to roll out its "trending now" feature on the social networking site across all users in the United States. The official rollout was done a month after the application began testing the feature using a small number of people in the country. To find trending topics, visit the search page or try them out in the For You Feed.

In a Threads app post, Instagram leader Adam Mosseri said the app was already live and could be considered "an easy way to see what others are talking about on Threads."

Launching trending topics would make Threads more like X, because users will be able to discover timely conversations happening on the social network. To date, Threads has lacked a real sense of community, and the introduction of trending topics may correct this because it allows you to get an idea of what people are currently discussing outside of what you see in your own feeds.

Meta had earlier told TechCrunch that trending topics will be determined by Meta AI systems and based on "what people are engaging with on Threads." The system considers a number of different factors, including how many users are talking about a certain topic and how many individual users have engaged with any posts on that topic.

The feature is a bit restricted as Threads can only give five trending topics at once, whereas X displays you more. Perhaps Threads restrict the number of trending topics for avoiding some safety and spam issues.

Although Meta said that Threads wouldn't actively promote political content, many topics often trending on the service have been political in nature. The day of President Biden's State of the Union address earlier this month had a lot of that in the trending topics for Threads. Meta has sought to distance itself from politics for years on its other services, but the company doesn't suppress politics from its trends feature on Threads — yet.
