Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced today that Threads, the Twitter-like app developed by Instagram, will roll out an edit button. You'll be able to edit a post as many times as you want within five minutes of posting. Earlier, you have been forced to delete a post and repost it in case of a typo.
Unlike X (formerly Twitter), which introduced an edit button only last year and then relegated it to a paid service, Threads is giving it to users for free. The edit button is available on mobile and the web, and comes around three months after the social network first launched.
However, Threads does not show the edit history of a post, which is something that X offers in order to allow for transparency while also preventing misinformation. In this case, users on Threads can post something, have it garner likes and reposts, and then change the text of the post afterwards without having any sort of record of what it had originally stated. This raises issues because it makes it easy for the edit button to be used maliciously.
TechCrunch has reached out to Meta to find out if the company has plans to add an edit history function.
Zuckerberg also announced that Threads is launching "Voice Threads," which like its name entails, allows users to add voice posts to the social network. This is a great update, especially for people who favor voice options more than typing ones. To post, you start with a voice post either as a reply or a new thread tap on the microphone icon to record your audio. You then obtain an automatically generated caption to edit.
Threads added a new feature today for that as it reportedly readies to roll out a Trends feature in a bid to catch up with X. Such is coming after a Thread's user caught an update when a Thread's employee posted a screenshot accidentally about. In it, there appeared to be a numbered list of trending topics and data showing the number of active "threads" discussing those subjects.
Unlike on X, Trends list on Threads does not display the trends under topics such as News and Sports. The list of trends does not seem to be personalized and hence does not appear as "For You" does on X. This apart, the addition of the Trends page would make it a competitor to X.
