Instagram's Twitter-like app, Threads, is now adding live scores for sports games. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the platform has already started testing this feature of NBA games, and eventually plans to include support for other leagues as well.
The feature is launched as Threads continues to take on X, which has had live scores for sports games for nearly a decade now. The new feature will attract users of the Facebook-owned app who would otherwise visit X to share on the current games and keep abreast of the latest action. Threads isn't just adding live scores — it'll allow users to also tap on a team logo to go to the corresponding conversation about that team and hook up with other users following them.
According to Threads, the new feature will make it easier for users to join in conversations about their favorite teams. According to the company, basketball has become one of the most common topics on the social network, and NBA Threads has now emerged as one of the most active sports communities on the app. The idea behind the new feature, according to the company, is to make Threads the place for sports discourse.
On the same day as a game, you can search for it on Threads in order to see how and at what time the game is starting. If you search for it during a live game, you can see the running score. Once a game has concluded, you can search for it and see the final score.
This is the latest effort by Threads to build a more comprehensive platform to compete with X. Over the weekend, Threads finally rolled out its "trending now" feature to all users in the U.S. Introducing trending topics makes Threads even closer to X, for users will now be able to find timely conversations that are taking place on the social network.
