Meta’s latest social network, Threads, is launching its own fact-checking program after previously relying on Instagram and Facebook’s network for several months.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, mentioned that the ability for fact-checkers to evaluate and flag false content on Threads has been "recently" introduced. However, he did not provide specific details on when the program started or whether it is restricted to certain regions.
It remains unclear which organizations are collaborating with Meta for the fact-checking initiative on Threads. The company has been asked for more information, and updates will be provided if available.
This initiative appears to be a proactive step ahead of the upcoming U.S. elections. India is also currently in the midst of its general elections, but it seems unlikely that a social network would implement a fact-checking program during an election cycle rather than launching it beforehand.
In December, Meta expressed its intention to introduce the fact-checking program to Threads. “We currently match fact-check ratings from Facebook or Instagram to Threads, but our goal is for fact-checking partners to have the ability to review and rate misinformation on the app,” Mosseri stated at that time.
