Threads has officially launched its API for developers.

Meta announced today that it finally rolled out the much-awaited API for Threads so developers can build experiences around it.

Mark Zuckerberg took to posting about the API launch, saying, "The Threads API is now widely available and coming to more of you soon".

In "New API for Publish and Reply Management" by Threads engineer Jesse Chen, "With the new API, developers can publish posts, fetch their own content, and deploy reply management tools. That is, developers can let users hide/unhide or respond to specific replies.".

The company also said that besides the features listed above, developers will also be able to tap into analytics at the media and account level by measurements such as views, likes, replies, reposts, and quotes.

Adam Mosseri, Instagram head, also posted about the announcement saying that this will help "businesses and creators manage their Threads presence at scale."

For the first time ever, Mosseri talked about the company's work on the Threads API back in October of 2023. The company launched the API in a closed beta with the help of partners like Sprinklr, Sprout Social, Social News Desk, Hootsuite, tech news board Techmeme, and a few other developers. By then, Chen stated that Meta intends to make the API available to developers in wide scale in June. The company has kept its word.

Related to the new API launch, the company released a reference open source app on GitHub for developers to play around with.

Developers working with third-party apps on the social network are having a tough 2023. Access at different levels was cut or shut off by Twitter (now X), and Reddit. Decentralized social networks Mastodon and Bluesky have been much more developer-friendly. However, the biggest new social network is Meta's Threads with over 150 million users. And an API and integration with the fediverse also offers third-party developers a way to create some fantastic social media experiences.
