Threads Experiments with Allowing Users to Select Their Preferred Default Feed

Since last year when Threads launched, the users have been asking for an ability to select their "Following" feed as default. And now, after over a year of repeated requests, Meta is finally testing the feature for users.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Monday that the social network is now testing the option for users to select the For You, Following, or a custom feed as the default one.

It comes just a few days after Threads rolled out custom feeds, which let users curate feeds around specific topics or certain user profiles. A tool in this sense allows Threads to compete with Bluesky, an actual decentralized social network that lets users build their own algorithms, feeds, and lists.

Meta has been acting fast to update Threads in a time when many X users are moving over to Bluesky, which is now above 20 million. The new updates on the application show that Meta is trying to please users by listening to all their suggestions and giving them what they want to keep them from migrating to Bluesky.

Last week the platform rolled out some changes to surface more content from people you follow in the app's "For You" algorithmic feed. The backlash to the move, however, was fierce, with a number of users responding to an announcement post from Instagram head Adam Mosseri that they just want the option to make their Following feed their default feed.

Fast-forward a few days, and now users have the option to do so. In his announcement post, Zuckerberg said he's "interested to see how and if people use this."
The new feature is rolling out to select users, a Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch in an email.

While Threads boasts a robust user base of over 275 million monthly active users, it is catching flak from Bluesky that's growing way out of proportion. Data from Similarweb, an intelligence market firm reveals that Bluesky is soon to catch up with Threads regarding daily active users and if the social network can maintain the rapid growth rate that it has realized in recent times, it may eventually surpass or catch up with Threads.
