Since the PS5 Pro announcement, the PS5 Disc Drive has been the hottest ticket item, with online retailers selling out in a matter of minutes.
Gamers are scrambling to purchase the external disc drive required for the new PS5 Pro so they don't miss out on the opportunity to play physical media on their next-gen consoles.
Sony officially unveiled the PS5 Pro earlier this week, confirming that the console will launch without a built-in disc drive.
Instead, people who want to play through physical discs will have to buy the external PS5 Disc Drive, a move that has already sent off a buying frenzy.
At present, the PS5 Disc Drive is sitting at number 16 on Amazon's best-selling video game products.
It already had a sold out condition in the major online retailers like Best Buy and now is unavailable for order. For other major sites like Target, Walmart, and PlayStation Direct, you can still see its listing; however they'll run dry quite soon too.
This rushed effort to achieve the PS5 Disc Drive came as a result of Sony releasing the PS5 Slim late in 2023, which, like the former, required an external drive for compatibility with physical games. In contrast to the original PS5, whose disc and digital edition gave the option of having an internal disc drive, the Slim no longer had that feature.
