The U.S. Department of Justice reports that it has convicted a pair of Chinese nationals living in Maryland for an enormous scheme to steal from Apple. As the officials claimed, the scam included shipping more than 6,000 knock-off iPhones from Hong Kong to the company for its repair. Spoofing the IMEI and serial numbers, the duo received the real item instead.
As the DOJ reported, Sun and Xue collectively cost Apple over $2.5 million. 57 months in prison was the sentence handed down to both defendants; Xue has been ordered to pay restitution to the tune of nearly $400,000 to Apple, whereas Sun's figure stands at more than $1 million.
