Netflix is taking its latest addition to its gaming library from several sources: a daily word puzzle that is eerily similar to a lot of other mobile games that exist already.

Launched in October, the streaming company joined the well-known nonprofit media organization called TED to launch a new daily word puzzle game called TED Tumblewords. In this game, players slide rows of scrambled letters on a three-by-three grid to form words, creating the longest words possible, and earning points.

The market for word puzzle games is highly saturated, so it's evident that Tumblewords is another version of popular mobile games such as Word Cookies, Words With Friends, and perhaps most noticeably, Wordle, which is owned by the New York Times. Wordle already has a few copycats under its belt, including Quordle and Heardle, as well as one within LinkedIn's new collection of word games. It also joins another word game that Netflix already offers called Word Trails.

Overall, Tumblewords does not blow us away. However, it would do for a download for killing some time during one's daily morning commutes.

The new game features three modes, with the same concept of forming words using nine letters from a total arrangement laid out on a board that one can either move up and down or left and right. Similar to Scrabble, each tile has a different point value, and players can achieve bonus points for beginning words with specific letters. One can shuffle the board but only six times.

The "Daily Six" mode challenges the player to make six words and try to beat their high score daily. "Daily Ladder" mode consists of five levels that the player must reach. Each level requires a specific number of points to progress. In "Daily Match," the player plays against TED's bot. The player can also challenge friends or strangers online in turn-based matches.

The closest equivalent to Netflix's game is BitMango's Word Cookies from 2016. Its functionality is exactly as one would expect; players must connect letters on a puzzle board and build as many words as they can. One year later, a similar game for 2017, Word Connect, found its way into the mobile app market, further emphasizing that developers are mimicking each other and picking up on popular titles.

Tumblewords copies Wordle's streak feature, which forces the user to return daily. The results can be shared on social media with friends, which may also help acquire more users.

One thing Tumblewords stands out from the rest for is TED's use of collectible "Knowledge Cards," though, featuring a different fun fact related to various topics, such as the arts, business, health, and literature. For each completed collection of cards, players unlock a badge.

Starting today, TED Tumblewords will be available for download on iOS and Android. And use will require a Netflix subscription when playing on mobile; though it is free to play on TED.com/games.

Apart from the word puzzle, Netflix has a few upcoming games that are expected to debut soon. Some of these include Netflix Stories: Outer Banks, The Ultimatum: Choices, and Monument Valley 3. Also in the works is a game based on the well-known series "Squid Game".
