Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov said on his channel today that the company raised $330 million in investment through bond sales last week.
Durov said the offering was oversubscribed with favorable terms to the company.
This bond offering was oversubscribed, and we were happy to have global funds of the highest caliber with impeccable reputations as participants. The terms of the bonds (when adjusted for the Federal Reserve rate) were the most favorable for Telegram in the history of our company," he said on his channel.
Though he did not state the institutions that invested, he indicated that global banks are excited about the expansion of the company.
Over the past week, last week during an interview in the Financial Times, the company aims to be profitable next year, according to Durov. While he talked about Telegram taking an opportunity to go public.
The primary reason we began to monetize is that we wanted to stay independent. Generally speaking, we believe there is value in [an IPO] as a way to democratize access to the value of Telegram," he told FT.
Sources close to the deal said that the yield of the bonds is currently 7.7%. The maturity of the bonds would be either 2026 or when Telegram goes public, whichever comes first. These bonds were issued at a price of $91— up from $78 of the last issue.
The chat app with over 900 million users issued bonds worth $210 million last year. It has developed new means of earning revenues in the recent years such as advertisements, selling username on blockchain and premium subscription. This week, the company said it was offering personal users to change their accounts into business accounts and pay a fee subscription.
