But enough words: that Apple WWDC 2024 keynote packed it in, including a number of key new updates for iOS 18. Notably, of course, is Tap to Cash, more or less what it sounds like: the capability to pay for things by tapping together a pair of iPhones.
The feature is essentially an extension of Apple Pay's longtime Tap to Pay feature, as the name also suggests. In like manner, the new addition likely takes advantage of the NFC function on the device. Apple says the feature transfers money without any need to share personal info — nice added privacy element.
Apple certainly isn't the first to bring this feature to market, but one wonders what effects this feature will ultimately have on standalone payment device/platforms like Square.
The company also said it would allow users to customize icons as well as announced a new password manager app.
