Podcasting platform Substack has some new features in the works, the company announced Thursday. Most significantly, the company is launching a Spotify integration that will allow podcasters on Substack to sync and distribute all of their free and paid episodes to Spotify's streaming service. Additionally, Substack launched new custom audio transcripts and captions, as well as upgrades to how people share clips and consume video on mobile.

The features arrive just as Substack has announced that, collectively, podcasters on the platform are earning over $100 million per year in revenue and that that figure has more than doubled over the past year. This same period has also seen the active number of podcasters on the platform over double.

Having Spotify will make new integration, so Substack podcasts would be discoverable via the service. In this way, podcasters will easily reach more listeners. Furthermore, the integration will allow Substack podcasters' existing subscribers to listen to paid episodes on Spotify. According to Substack, such a potential with Spotify might help podcasters to earn more money because free listeners will nudged to upgrade to a subscription.

A Substack podcast will auto-integrate into Spotify. To do this, you need to click on podcast settings, then click on the Spotify dropdown and select "Sync to Spotify" to create a new feed with all present and future episodes. Paid episodes are indicated with a padlock, and listeners will link their Substack account to Spotify so they can listen to paid episodes directly from the streaming service.

Creators will be able to see data on streams, unique listeners, playtime, demographics, and more inside their Spotify for Podcasters account. Substack plans to make this data accessible via a creator's Substack podcast stats page in the future.

And new to custom audio transcripts and captions: Podcasters can upload their own transcript if they prefer a transcript automatically generated by Substack. Video podcasters can elect to upload a different audio track and free preview to be distributed to podcast RSS feeds instead of the automatically generated default one from the video uploaded.

Furthermore, podcasters and listeners can also now share a podcast video link to a specific timestamp or download a clip to post on other social platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and X.

Substack said it makes video podcasts easier to listen to on a mobile, as it includes inline video player on both its iOS and Android. That means readers could follow along while listening and pick up where they stopped in the video if part of the way through.

New features will rollout to all users today.
