Spotify announced today it would be allowing users to create and customize their own playlist art. For a while now, users have been able to upload custom images to any given playlist but can now design them on their own right within the app.
It's now available in beta on the Spotify mobile app, across 65 markets, and is accessible to both free and premium users.
Open the Spotify mobile app, navigate to one of your playlists that you would like to create custom art for, and tap the three-dot menu on the playlist page. From there, click the "Create cover art" option.
From here, you can upload a photo from your camera roll or start on a blank canvas and then play around with a few of several different elements, such as text styles, colors and effects. You can also change background colors and add gradients. And don't forget to add stickers.
According to Spotify, you can save just one custom cover art for one playlist at a time. That means when you create a new one, it automatically replaces the previous one you made for that particular playlist. To have more than one cover art for a playlist, you have to save it first before you make another one.
While creating custom cover art isn't particularly significant as an expansion of the streaming service, it does appear to be a fun one. This will continue to be part of the efforts Spotify is undertaking in order to continue giving users more ways to personalize their experience on the app. The company is currently beta-testing a feature that lets users create personalized playlists based on written prompts.
It comes at a time when the streaming service is adding new features to the app as it continues to vie with services such as Apple Music and YouTube Music.
Last week, Spotify said that it is testing music videos for its premium users in 85 more countries. This feature gives Spotify a chance to compete better with YouTube, whose native support for music videos puts it in a strong position.
