The studio behind Alto's Adventure and Alto's Odyssey, Snowman, has released their new title, Laya's Horizon, exclusively with Netflix. This wingsuit game lets the player master all the different flying techniques-dive off mountains, weaving across forests, and floating over rivers-to unlock their new abilities while exploring the vast, peaceful world around them. Laya's Horizon is now available to download on iOS and Android via Netflix Games.
As per an interview with TechCrunch, Snowman CEO and founder Ryan Cash said that the studio started working on Laya's Horizon back in May 2018. Cash said that Snowman is passionate about creating games that let players get away to somewhere beautiful-often in nature-where they can get into a zen zone.
"The idea for the game was something we had been thinking about for a long time," Cash said. "I think everybody who is on the team probably has their own inspiration which they bring to the game but for me, I mean, I grew up basically fascinated with airplanes. Flying's always been a huge part of my life but I've also always dreamed to fly as almost every child does.". If we have done the job correctly, we enabled people to experience what it might feel like to fly. We wanted to create something that would be accessible and available to people at any time.
Horizons is the most ambitious game that the studio has ever developed so far," Laya's Horizon said. Procedurally generated, Cash noted that every tree that you see in the game was placed by a person on the studio's team.
Laya's Horizon, Studio Head Designer and Developer, Jason Medeiros expressed in an interview with TechCrunch, differs in actions gameplay from other titles due to the fact that takes the player into the third dimension. The player chooses whether he will squeeze or weave between tight spaces amidst trees. Said Medeiros: "You'll notice you have a very nuanced control over your character in Laya's Horizon."
"As a parent myself, I hope that for the players, they have that same kind of fun they had when they were young and riding their bikes with friends around the neighborhood," said Medeiros. "We captured that adventure and free spirit when you were young.". It's a little more extreme, you're flying, but it's a friendly world that we've built. There are lots of secrets to discover and lots to do, just like there hopefully was in your neighborhood when growing up.
Today marks the first time Snowman has launched a game exclusively with Netflix. In September of last year, the studio launched a vertical scrolling platformer called Lucky Luna via Netflix Games. When asked about Snowman's ongoing collaboration with Netflix, Cash said Snowman is excited about working with the streaming giant for "many years to come."
Netflix recently said that it has 40 games planned for this year and is working on 70 more with its partners. In addition, the streaming service has 16 games in development with its in-house game studios. It had also announced earlier this year that it will be bringing Ustwo's Monument Valley franchise to its platform, starting with Monument Valley 1 and Monument Valley 2, with more to come. Netflix launched games in November 2021 and has since released more than 55 titles.
