Snapchat has today announced that its new feature called 'Director Mode,' an advanced video creation process, is now available for all app users on iOS. The company had presented a preview of the feature at its Partner Summit in the earlier part of the year.
Director Mode is available with advanced editing features through an app offering more developed green screen, variable playback speed options, advanced editing tools, and control to shoot the front and back-facing cameras simultaneously to produce 360-degree content.
Many of these features are available in other apps, so functionally it's not a big change (360 mode has only been available on iOS to date). But it's a huge addition for Snap creators in particular, which will offer even more tools to create standout clips inside the app.
Which of course also includes Spotlight content, Snap's TikTok-clone functionality, used by more than 300 million Snapchatters monthly.
Besides that, time spent in-app viewing Spotlight content increased 55% year over year. These new tools offer more ways to tap into the popularity of Spotlight with your short clips.
However, it is paying Spotlight creators less at the same time through its Spotlight Fund: money that the company allocates daily to the clips most-watched on the service. Under the program, Snap has paid creators millions, though it will shift over time to start phasing it out altogether as it looks to get Spotlight to more independently become sustainable.
This is likely to infuriate Snap creators who have taken Spotlight to be the hub, but the larger point is that these creators can now be allowed to work out brand partnerships for promotional purposes within the app-a way that can ensure them making some money from Snap content and without the necessity of funds coming directly from the application.
Perhaps, then, these extra creative tools are coming at the right time to provide even more choices for creators to make the most of their content in a way that creates new brand deals and relationships. Within the app, the camera toolbar now has Director Mode or you can tap the 'Create' button in Spotlight to get to the more advanced editing options. The director mode has also seen a release, starting this time with availability on android for some users only though full rollout.
