This is noteworthy.
Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel has announced that the company is integrating more features from Google’s Gemini AI system to enhance its AI capabilities. What’s particularly intriguing is that until now, Snap’s primary generative AI feature, the “My AI” bot, has been powered by OpenAI’s GPT models, with which Snap has collaborated for over a year.
So why is Snap making the switch to Google now, and what advantages does Google’s Gemini offer over OpenAI’s models?
Reports indicate that integrating Gemini’s capabilities will enhance My AI’s ability to interpret various types of information, including text, audio, images, and videos.
Snap CEO Evan Spiegel elaborated on this, stating:
“My AI is like a brilliant best friend powered by artificial intelligence. It’s a chatbot where users can ask general knowledge questions, learn about the world, and engage in fun, friendly conversations. As we began collaborating with Google and experimenting with Gemini’s features, we discovered an incredible ability to assist users in solving problems based on visual context.”
This suggests that Google’s systems may currently outperform OpenAI in handling multimodal inputs. Spiegel also highlighted Google’s superior translation capabilities as a key factor in this transition.
It’s still unclear whether Snap is completely abandoning OpenAI for its AI integrations, but it appears that the company will increasingly rely on Google’s tools moving forward. These tools seem to align better with how Snap users interact with AI.
This shift raises questions about a broader trend away from OpenAI’s tools in favor of Gemini and other models. While OpenAI quickly emerged as a leader in the AI space with the launch of ChatGPT, both Meta and Google are actively developing more advanced models with greater capabilities that could surpass OpenAI’s offerings. Additionally, xAI is working on its own powerful AI models, but for now, Meta and Google appear to be at the forefront in multimodal translation and AI integration.
While this shift doesn’t necessarily signal a significant market change just yet, it’s noteworthy that Snap is opting for Gemini over GPT for its expanded AI initiatives.
