The company is pushing further into its inclusivity efforts through a new series of Lenses, asking its users to fingerspell during International Week of the Deaf.
According to Snapchat:
"Utilizing SignAll's AI and computer vision technology that reads and interprets American Sign Language language, these AR Lenses will encourage Snapchatters to finger spell their name, as well as other everyday words like 'love, hug', and 'smile'".
With the help of deaf and hard-of-hearing employees at Snap, the Lenses hope to raise more awareness about sign language and promote a more inclusive atmosphere and better still, have more creators pay attention to deaf users while developing content.
They can further share their experience of using the Lenses with friends and also Snapchat has introduced some new sticker packs for Bitmoji to favor the event.
So far, a great move by Snap, as for most of them, sign language is a foreign concept, something they see bits and pieces of but aren't actively experiencing in many different interactions. Through promoting ASL in the app and increasing awareness, Snapchat could get more users to appreciate the need for more inclusive communication that might make way for more people to consider this within their content and posting process.
