About time Snapchat's AR feature is getting a second chance-through a new Skype extension, with which you'll be able to use Snap Lenses in your Skype chats.
That's what Snap says:
Starting today, we're bringing Lenses to Skype, so the community of more than 80 million monthly active Skype users can now add Lenses to their conversations with friends and family. With dozens of Lenses to choose from, chats are even more personalized and fun – get some giggles from donning a glitter beard, go retro with disco glasses, or simply show your love with raining hearts.
Although you could already do that, kind of, with Snap's new Chrome extension, which allows you to apply Snap Lenses via your webcam.
Not every Skype user happens to use Chrome of course, but the functionality has been re-added last month as Snap looks to expand its Lenses on more surfaces once again.
A new move by Snap is taking its first breath, as it cleared out its standalone Snap Camera application back in January last year and cut the feature that let you show up as a potato, a unicorn, among others, on your Zoom calls.
And now, Snap finally seems to be open to expanding third-party tools once again, something that can lead to extra fun and interaction in video chats.
Why does Snap want to expand Lenses again?
Well, that gives Snap more exposure, which will likely get more people to the app. Snap only closed its original Snap Camera extension for cost-cutting reasons, but somehow, it seems someone at Snap has decided that was not the way to go and as it refocuses on its main markets, in an effort to monetize its best revenue opportunities, that exposure value patently over balances.
So, more Snap Lenses in even more places.
According to Snapchat, the company will add further Lenses to the Skype library over the following months and have its eye set on tracking the latest trends in AR.
