Snapchat has introduced new safety features, including the ability to request live location sharing.

Snapchat is introducing a new security feature to the Snap Map, which means soon, parents will be in a better position to insist that teenagers share their real-time location on the app.
The new feature will allow parents to, at their option, request that this data be shared with their teen at their discretion, prompting the user to share their location in real-time. Users will also be able to share their location back, which helps keep users and family alert on where they are at all times.

It could be a good way of ensuring the relief of anxious parents in knowing where their child is; hence, the more valuable the connective app becomes and an easy way to keep tabs on your child without intrusion.

Well, it might feel just a little bit suffocating for the teen, but used in moderation, it gives more peace of mind, enhancing more safety as your teens start stretching their movements.

Worth noting too is that you can already ask for a contact's location using iOS or the Google Maps app on Android, so the functionality itself is not all that new, but having it active inside of Snap, where your kids probably are going to be active, might be a more effective prompt.

In addition to this, Snap provides more transparency on parents' locus over their teen's location-sharing decisions.
And now, parents will be able to see who their teen shares live location information with, if that concern comes up at all.

As Snap said:

"This will help parents see which friends their teen shares their location with on Snap Map, helping families have informed conversations about what sharing choices work best for them."

Snap is also adding "Travel Notifications", which will alert the parents when the teen is leaving from or arriving at pre-set destinations (like home, school, etc.), while it's also rolling out additional reminders for users to review their location sharing settings at regular intervals.

Because you may no longer want your ex-girlfriend to track your movements.

Adding to Snap's current Family Center features, these present a range of options that can empower parents to track, to some extent, who their teens are connecting with in the app. And as Snap remains a teen leader (according to Pew Research, around 60% of U.S. teens use Snap regularly), the additions can be very meaningful enhancements in helping Snap become a safer partner rather than "that secret messaging app.".

Indeed, Snap has made a lot of progress in this regard, and functionalities like this could indeed make parents increasingly depend on Snap for being a major communicative platform, especially among older teens. Snapchat says all these above features will be rolled out over the coming weeks.
