After teasing it in May, Snapchat has now provided more details about its upcoming “Snap Sports Network.” This new platform will feature a group of popular sports creators delivering updates on unconventional and niche sports.
In this context, the term "sports" is used loosely. Instead of covering mainstream sports headlines, Snap’s Sports Network will spotlight quirky, niche sports like dog surfing, extreme ironing, professional pillow fighting, and even water bottle flipping.
As Snap explains:
“With an average of 180 million Snapchatters watching sports content monthly, we’re bringing a light-hearted and fun twist, encouraging Snapchatters to engage with unique sports they may have never tried. From July 19th through August 7th, the Snap Sports Network will release six episodes featuring lively, high-energy segments celebrating unconventional sports captured by Snapchatters worldwide.”
The network will be anchored by a team of four, including creators like Kris London and Rachel DeMita, alongside other influencers typically focused on traditional sports.
The program will also open up new sponsorship opportunities, with e.l.f. Cosmetics sponsoring the initial episodes of the series.
This unconventional approach to sports could resonate with Snap’s audience and boost engagement on the platform. As Snap points out, millions of users are already interested in sports content, and these quirky, niche events are likely to attract this group while also sparking trends and generating broader interest within the Snap community.
This initiative could be a big win for the app, as Snap appears to recognize its potential to enhance in-app activity. With the upcoming Olympics, it’s an ideal moment for Snap to introduce its audience to lesser-known sports.
You can find Snap Sports Network in the Discover section of the app later this week.
