The Boston-based company is coming out with news that adds Active Guard Outdoor Protection to the list of monthly subscription options. The new tier includes an added layer of 24/7 monitoring to the home security service. The Outdoor Protection Pro costs $50 a month, and the charge covers the Boston-based company's standard $32 indoor monitoring service.
The new offer will only be received by a new piece of hardware known as the Outdoor Security Camera Series 2. SimpliSafe claims the limitations are due to its predecessor's inability to run its 'AI for the Familiar Face' feature ensuring users will not experience false alarms at their own places.
If the system fails to identify the individual as it would have when it was trained, then a human agent will be alerted. Depending upon the circumstances of the occurrence, response, and other reasons, an employee of SimpliSafe can alert the individual to the surveillance, activate a siren and floodlights, and inform appropriate authorities.
According to Product SVP Hooman Shahidi speaking with TechCrunch, it was intentional on the side of the company not to just use the human agent to the end for the final decision not to be made by AI.
"[The AI] is all to help the agents," Shahidi said. "We've trained our agents on racial bias and have a pretty diverse workforce that manages our monitoring center. This is really just to help them, as opposed to being a replacement for them."
CEO Christian Cerda says that, like every other company on Earth, SimpliSafe is indeed testing generative AI solutions, but the company takes a cautious approach towards the deployment of those technologies.
The first generation Outdoor Security Camera Series 2 costs the exact same, $200. The camera is waterproof and can be mounted to a wall or other solid surface. This device can either be hardwired or run on a charge via its use of a battery. The system shoots in HD, providing a 140-degree view of the surrounding area, which translates to catching details that are 15 feet away. Microphones and speakers are also built-in for two-way communication.
Founded in 2006, SimpliSafe is one of the top three home security companies in the U.S., after ADT and Vivint. In the past 18 years, the firm has continued to see increased competition as smart home cameras proliferate from the likes of Amazon's Ring and Google's Nest.
SimpliSafe is predominately based in the United States, but the company just opened its first international office in the United Kingdom in 2019. In April 2023 the security firm expanded into a bigger Boston office space. The company is also home to a good number of former iRobot employees, including Cerda, who was previously the Roomba-maker's COO.
