That is where Gemini comes into the picture, which also happens to be Google's family of cutting-edge generative AI models. And now, it is coming to Samsung's new flagship smartphone-the Galaxy S24. Today, Google and Samsung said they are making available in coordination with today's unveiling of the Galaxy S24.

On Galaxy S24 phones, Gemini — specifically Gemini Pro, a mid-range model designed for a range of tasks — will power components of Samsung's Notes, Voice Recorder and Keyboard apps, delivering what Google describes as "better summarization features." Users will be able to, for example, record a lecture using Voice Recorder and receive a summary of the important parts of the lesson.

Meanwhile, the more efficient, compact Gemini version, dubbed Gemini Nano, will introduce a new capability in Google Messages: Magic Compose, which can compose messages in styles such as "excited," "formal," and "lyrical" on-device, without needing an internet connection.

Another interesting point is that Galaxy S24 is the second model of Android device with a Gemini Nano model, besides Google's own Pixel 8 Pro. On the Pixel 8 Pro, Nano is in charge of running capabilities such as AI summarizer feature in Recorder application and suggested replies in Google's keyboard app Gboard.

Other than Gemini, Google's Imagen 2 text-to-image model will also be integrated into the Galaxy S24, running photo editing functions in its Gallery app. (Imagen 2 was unveiled at Google I/O last May and just last month, in preview, hit the web). One is called Generative Edit, where it fills in missing parts of images based on what is known in context.

Google also states that Samsung will be one of the first partners to test the Gemini Ultra, the biggest and most powerful Gemini model, before it's more broadly available to developers and enterprises sometime this year. Neither firm said exactly how Ultra might be used in the Galaxy S24, however-or any other Samsung devices for that matter.

Late last year, Google said Android users would be able to tap into Gemini via Bard and Google Assistant, the intelligent assistant, would gain an integration with Bard on Pixel devices. Mum's the word on whether Galaxy S24 users can expect the same Assistant and Bard upgrades; hopefully we'll learn more during today's Galaxy S24 press conference.
