Roblox yesterday announced two new AI technologies that will accelerate the time spent in creating avatars and 3D models. Developed atop Roblox artificial intelligence, the technologies are supposed to make creators faster in avoiding lengthy avatar setup and texturing when building content on the virtual platform.
The first feature is called "Avatar Auto Setup" and will simplify the creation of avatars by automatically converting a 3D body mesh into a live, animated avatar ready for users to adopt. By choosing this new feature on the part of the creator, Roblox will run a few tests over an asset and automatically rig, cage, segment and skin 3D models. In technical terms, the auto setup maps where the avatar's different body parts are to add clothing, then maps its facial features to add facial animation. It can then start animating and getting in touch with the environment around it.
Roblox says the Avatar Auto Setup will make it possible for creators to finish a process that normally takes days in just a few minutes.
The second feature is called "Texture Generator," and it allows creators to rapidly change the look of 3D objects with plain language text prompts. Creators can utilize the feature to speedily prototype new looks, as well as bring new textures to life. It maps the object and overlays a three dimensional texture on top of it that aligns with the geometry of the object.
For example, you type in a text prompt and say how you will like to create the texture for a 3D wooden treasure chest. In this case, the generator would capture the sharpness of its corners, add wooden planks, and a lock unto it. Or you could request the feature to generate the look of a red weathered leather backpack, after which it will produce a fully 3D texture over the asset.
According to Roblox, this whole process normally would take hours or even days for an artist to complete. With Texture Generator, Roblox is allowing creators to do the same thing in 15 to 30 seconds.
This feature can be used very easily by a creator to create and mass produce several versions of an object in different colors or textures. For instance, you could have one model of trophy; you could then generate one in gold, silver, and bronze.
After creating a 3D object, you can save it and even use the generated result. You can try generating another result in case you don't like what was created.
Our new AI technologies help anyone from an indie developer to a professional game studio quickly build rich, compelling content on the Roblox platform – get them from idea to shared reality, faster than ever," said Nick Tornow, vice president of creator engineering at Roblox, in the press release. With these tools, creators are more likely to focus on creative ideation and less on implementation, the engagement they now experience leading them to grow their businesses.
Both Avatar Auto-Setup and Texture Generator are in alpha and public beta, respectively, with the latter available in Roblox Studio.
