Pinterest reveals its trend predictions for 2024, informed by in-app engagement data.

Social media company Pinterest has published its annual "Pinterest Predicts" trend report, featuring a number of the top emerging trends of 2023, based on search activity in the app, as well as Pinterest's own analysis of where things are headed based on such.
The report is intended to help Pin marketers spot key areas of opportunity, as they conduct their forward-looking strategic planning in the app.
And, says Pinterest, it's remarkably accurate.

According to Pinterest:

"Because people use Pinterest to plan, we have unique early insight into what people are going to do, try or buy next. Western Gothic. Hot Metals. Blue Beauty. These are just a few of the trends we're calling for next year across ten different categories. And these are trends you can trust: In fact, 80% of the trends we predicted for the last four years came true."

I mean, there are levers in that equation, but basically, Pinterest's team is really good at identifying what's trending up and what's trending down, based on platform usage data.

What does Pinterest predict is next?

This year's trend report is in a new format, with a range of topics floating on the main screen you can tap into for more information.
You will then get one summary page of any trend with trending search words, example Pins, and much more.
You are also allowed to download in a much shorter version of the same 23 trends singled out, in a 6-page PDF summary.
Some of the top trend predictions of Pinterest include the western goth, jellyfish-inspired design, vintage jazz and 70s weddings, home aquarium architecture, ceramic piggy banks, and badminton.

Yep, some pretty weird ones in there, but again, Pinterest says that its predictions are 80% accurate, so who are we to argue?

You can see Pinterest's full overviews of each of these trends on the dedicated mini-site.

On another notable note, Pinterest also says that younger users are paying more attention in the app:

"In 2023, we saw that more Gen Z and Millennials checked out trends in our annual report and took action on these forecasts. According to our most recent research, saves are up across Pinterest Predicts among Gen Z compared to any other age. And last year, we see that their saves of all things Pinterest Predicts 2023 trend are up 25% over the prior year among Millennials."

Pinterest has mainly been used over time by middle-aged women, but its value is increasing seemingly for most of its audiences, which is also a good point.

Pinterest also said that, as part of its annual Predictions, brand partners will now be able to sponsor a Pinterest Predicts trend this year, "which includes specific rights to a trend in your country and a custom badge for your ads".

So if that's what you were looking for to make a more direct use of these insights in your marketing, that might be it.

It's interesting by way of overview of the key topics of interest among Pinners, and where the platform is seeing engagement. And at 482 million users, and rising, who all come to the platform with purchase intent, it may well be worth considering your Pin options in 2024.
