Pinterest, as part of an overview of its search system, how it works, and how it has evolved over time to show better matches, has shared some new insights into user search activity.
About Pinterest:
"There are now more than 5 billion searches on Pinterest every month. As people prepare for a post-pandemic life, searches for outfits, vacations, and home renovations are at all-time highs, and searches for weddings have presumed pre-pandemic levels."
That's a lot of search activity- in context, the last time Pinterest officially reported its total search volume was in 2016, when it was facilitating 2 billion searches every month. This means that the search volume on Pinterest has increased by 150% within the last five years, a number that, given the pandemic and the rate at which eCommerce and online product discovery have been boosted, really doesn't come as a surprise. That said, this does lend a bit more context to the user traffic of Pinterest, where most of these searches-if not all-of products looking to purchase.
This is, of course, still a long ways from Google, at reportedly 3.5 billion searches per day. Again, however, Pinterest's focus is on product lists specifically, and getting users the right thing to buy, whether it be through clothing Pins, recipes, travel notes, etc.
And while the vaccine roll-out may have an ongoing affect on Pin search, Pinterest notes that Pin search activity is also shifting as a result. Indeed, last month, Pinterest provided further insight into this area, noting that, for example, searches for "dream vacation destinations" are up 13x, while "luxury vacation" searches are up 6x. Now, Pinterest is seeing expanded travel-related trends emerge, which could provide more food for thought for your Pin strategy.
In addition, Pinterest reports that the number of searches from Gen Z Pinners is up 31% year over year, and searches for products specifically have grown more than 20 times year over year.
With more than 478 million users now, opportunity is growing in the Pins, and it's worth noting these trend shifts within your strategic planning.
