Pinterest is still stepping up another notch in maximizing inclusion by introducing a new, first-of-its-kind hair pattern search option that enables Pinterest users to look for hair products and ideas based on the different types of hair.
Its skin tone search qualifier, Pinners will now also be able to discover ideas based on specific hair types, which narrows down their results by making the matches in the app more personalized and useful.
According to Pinterest
Hair pattern search allows users to filter hair searches through six different hair patterns using computer vision-driven object detection. Over the coming weeks, users will be able to search for a broad hair term such as "summer hairstyles," "glam hair," or "short hair" and then filter the results by choosing one of the six hair patterns to find hair inspiration most relevant to their style and preference.
And there'll be plenty of ideas to pick from-Pinterest also says that its system already recognizes a hair pattern in over 500 million images, so users should be able to get results based on their personal selection.
The easy filters make it much easier for every user to find more specified matches, and as mentioned before, add to Pinterest's aim of maximizing inclusion with all the processes in functional ranges to help guide these groups' discovery processes.
Hair specifically is an important area of interest for Pinners.
"There were more than 120 million searches on hair in the last month alone, and over 5 billion Pins were created related to hair on Pinterest. We have also found that the most popular hair searches on Pinterest are very personal, such as "natural hair twists protective" (15x) and "best haircuts for thick wavy hair" (13x)."
It may not seem like a major, functional addition, but it can be a big help for specific people and groups by facilitating more inclusion on all levels, and it's another key step forward, which will no doubt be replicated by other apps.
And from the marketing point of view, that might also motivate the brands to think of the type of representation and inclusion with their Pin listings since, now users can hone into more specific matches. Want to maximize your chances? Better make sure you have related images too.
