Building on several months of testing its new AI-powered "Body Type Filters" in some markets, Pinterest said it is now expanding the rollout to searches for women's fashion and wedding ideas that make it easier for Pinners to find matches that more closely reflect their body type.
Pinterest explains that
"Body type ranges give users of Pinterest the power to make a choice: With regards to search for women's fashion or wedding inspiration, it will prompt with a visual cue inviting users to pick between four body type ranges that will tailor up customized search results that might better reflect their self-view."
This system is based on the proprietary AI technology of Pinterest which uses body shape, size and form to identify different body types in more than 3.5 billion images posted on the platform.
This will then enable a user to choose the appropriate shape that best represents them, whereby the search results displayed are more inclusive and indicative for each person.
It is the latest under Pinterest's expanded diversity efforts, which also include its skin tone search filters and hair type discovery options. These features provide more personalization and further enhance the user experience.
Thus, instead of just using AI as a novelty, Pinterest is attempting to use the technology as an additive feature, which can better inform usage options.
It appears to be a good option which will further raise both inclusion, as well as the actual accuracy of the results displayed.
In a move, body type ranges are now available for women's fashion and wedding-related content in the U.S and are being tested in Canada. According to Pinterest, its rollouts for men's fashion will be available later this year, and "on an ongoing basis" for new verticals and additional international markets.
