OpenAI's AI Agents Might Launch in January

OpenAI could offer an "AI agent" tool as soon as January.

This is what Bloomberg reported in that the company is nearing the launch of software, code-named "Operator," that can take direct actions on a computer used by a person. OpenAI plans to first roll out Operator as a developer API preview, according to sources.

Operator would compete with Anthropic's recently announced agent feature, Computer Use, and Google's rumored consumer-oriented agent among others. It's not yet clear if OpenAI's will be able to differentiate themselves; Bloomberg guesses it may come as a general-purpose tool that performs actions in a web browser.

Same day, OpenAI released its policy paper loaded with recommendations for the U.S. AI strategy. That paper reportedly includes such ideas as federal "economic zones" dedicated to work in building AI infrastructure and an AI bloc created with U.S. allies to challenge China.
