The popular AI chatbot service ChatGPT experienced multiple outages today, with OpenAI working for hours to restore full functionality.
According to OpenAI's service status tracker, the first issue arose at 12:21 AM PDT on June 4. OpenAI reported that the problem was resolved by 4:19 AM PT. However, a second outage occurred later in the day at 7:33 AM PT, prompting further investigation. By 10:17 AM PDT, OpenAI confirmed that all systems were operational again.
“We experienced a major outage impacting all users on all plans of ChatGPT. The impact included all ChatGPT-related services but did not affect platform.openai.com or the API. This incident started on June 4th at 2:15 PM GMT and was resolved by 5:01 PM GMT,” OpenAI stated, without providing additional details about the cause.
The service disruption affected users globally, with many taking to X (formerly Twitter) and Threads to report the issue. ChatGPT currently has over 100 million weekly users, according to OpenAI.
In the past 30 days, there have been several partial outages for ChatGPT users. The most notable recent issue was caused by a Bing API outage, which temporarily prevented users from accessing web results.
