ChatGPT could become more expensive in the near future.
According to internal documents cited by The New York Times, OpenAI plans to raise the price of individual ChatGPT subscriptions from $20 to $22 per month by the end of this year. A more significant price hike is expected by 2029, with ChatGPT Plus subscriptions projected to cost $44 per month.
These moves come as OpenAI faces pressure from investors to reduce its financial losses. Despite generating $300 million in monthly revenue as of August, the company is projected to lose around $5 billion this year, largely due to costs related to staffing, office space, and AI training infrastructure. At one point, operating ChatGPT reportedly cost OpenAI $700,000 per day.
However, rapid price increases could spark backlash. Although ChatGPT currently has around 10 million paying users, surveys show many already feel the $20-per-month subscription fee is too high.
