OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode feature to the web, allowing users to engage with the AI chatbot directly from their browser. The company's chief product officer, Kevin Weil, announced the news on X.
Advanced Voice Mode, which makes it more natural to speak with ChatGPT, is being released to ChatGPT's paying customers this week. To use the feature, you'll need to be either a Plus, Enterprise, Teams, or Edu subscriber.
The web launch follows the debut of OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Mode in ChatGPT’s iOS and Android apps in September.
Advanced Voice Mode uses OpenAI’s GPT-4o’s native audio capabilities to allow for natural, real-time conversations between users and ChatGPT. The chatbot is able to understand and respond to non-verbal cues, including things like your talking speed. The chatbot can also respond with emotion.
To begin a voice conversation on the web, you would need to click on the Voice icon at the bottom right of ChatGPT's prompt window. You would then be prompted for permission from your browser to access your computer's microphone. After that, if you've initiated the voice conversation, a screen will open up with a blue orb in the center.
You get nine output voices for ChatGPT, each having its very own tone and character. For example, you can opt for "Arbor," which is described as easygoing and versatile or, you can pick "Ember," which is described as confident and optimistic.
Weil says OpenAI will roll out the feature to free users in "the coming weeks.
More limits apply for users who are Plus and Team subscribers when using Advanced Voice Mode. Daily limits do change, but according to a help page on the feature, OpenAI will notify you when you have 15 minutes left of advanced voice for the day. Free users will get access to a monthly preview.
