OpenAI acquired Chat.com, adding to its collection of famous domain names.
This morning, Chat.com redirects to the AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT. An email from an OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the acquisition.
One of the more established domains in the web and registered way back in September 1996, the domain was actually bought last year by Dharmesh Shah, co-founder and CTO of HubSpot, for $15.5 million, ranking it among the top two all-time publicly reported domain sales.
Shah last March reported that he'd sold Chat.com to an undisclosed buyer. And late today, in a post on X, he confirmed that OpenAI was that buyer — which would suggest that he'd been paid partly or fully in OpenAI shares.
The domain name doesn't seem to have changed hands since it sold last year so OpenAI isn't hosting ChatGPT on Chat.com — so this probably doesn't represent a brand change.
It refused to say how much it paid for the purchase of Chat.com.
