Okay so there's nothing to get excited about yet, doesn't really mean much, could be nothing, etc.
But.
Instagram appears to be getting ready for the launch in Europe of Threads, which has thus far become difficult under evolving data privacy regulations in the region.
Launched, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri explained that Threads would not be available to European users "anytime soon", largely because of the deployment of the EU's new Digital Markets Act (DMA), which introduces an array of new rules for large tech platforms in the areas of reporting and user data controls among privacy regulations.
Meta has been working very hard to define the best way forward for its business on these updates, and it probably has found a huge loophole, in providing advertising-free and not-tracking any data variants of both Facebook and IG to the users of the EU at a monthly subscription.
Meta doesn't really want people to pay the equivalent of $US10.60 per month to avoid ads in the region, and it won't be expecting to see big takeup of the option. But by providing such, that'll enable the company to continue tracking non-paying user data for ads, because technically they'll now have a way to opt-out, and keep using its apps. If they pay a monthly charge instead.
Perhaps that just settles a clearer route for Threads, which Mosseri announced would take months of design before coming available in Europe. Or perhaps this is just placeholder text, and Threads isn't really any more ready for an EU release.
Maybe just a note, a false alarm. Nothing to see here.
Instagram has said very little about the above, although Mosseri had commented in September that he hoped to be able to reveal something on this front sometime soon.
I guess that's some time now, so…Maybe it's coming, bringing a surge of new users into the app and potentially helping it regain growth momentum.
It feels like the momentum for Threads has persisted unsteadily lately, as more people are turning their backs on X, with owner Elon Musk stirring the flames further with his updates and opinions.
Maybe this is the right time for Threads' EU push.
We will let you know what's going on.
