This year, Netflix is adding the popular supernatural mystery thriller game Oxenfree to its gaming roster. Following an announcement at the company's Tudum global fan event on Saturday, Netflix subscribers can now download Oxenfree: Netflix Edition on iOS and Android devices. A year after acquiring Night School Studio, Netflix is launching its first acquisition as a game.
Oxenfree was initially released back in 2016 and was Night School's first title. The version for Netflix has no ads and in-app purchases and also adds localization support.
The game involves the player as Alex, a rebellious teenager who brings her new stepbrother Jonas to an overnight party on Edwards Island, an abandoned military island. The night then takes a turn when the group of friends unintentionally open a ghostly rift spawned from the island's cryptic past. Throughout the game, players choose every aspect of Alex's story while exploring the island through dialogue choices.
“Oxenfree is such a special game to so many people and launching on Netflix is a really exciting opportunity for us to introduce Alex’s story to even more people – maybe even someone who never thought they’d love playing a game,” said Sean Krankel, co-founder and studio director at Night School Studio, in a statement. With Oxenfree: Netflix Edition, we have the perfect platform as a Netflix games studio for the game to be available to people all over the world. For an eternity, our community has been asking for subtitles in more languages, and this version of Oxenfree: Netflix Edition finally brings the best story experience for players around the globe in their local language.
Available at launch, in-game subtitles in more than 30 languages, which include Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Spanish (LatAm), Spanish (Spain), Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.
While Netflix has sent a few games its way over the last couple of months via its streaming service, Oxenfree: Netflix Edition is the first from within Netflix's own gaming walls. It may also be a way to get more eyes on the Netflix game service, the company's probably biggest aim, particularly in light of a recent report that revealed that less than 1 percent of Netflix subscribers are interested in Netflix Games.
You can download Oxenfree: Netflix Edition free from a mobile device at netflix.com/oxenfree. When playing games on Netflix, users on an iOS or Android mobile phone will see a dedicated games row where they can select any game to download. Subscribers on an Android or iOS tablet will see a dedicated games row or be able to select games from the Categories drop-down menu to download and play.
Netflix is expected to have more than 50 games on its platform by the end of the year. The company launched its gaming service in November 2021 and has added new titles every month since then. The titles are free to play at the moment, and there are no in-app purchases.
